When Was the Last Time You Felt Truly Connected?

Think about the last time you felt completely connected to your life. Not simply happy because something wonderful had happened, or relieved because something difficult had finally worked out, but genuinely present. Perhaps you were sitting with someone you love, enjoying a quiet moment outdoors, or doing something so meaningful that you forgot to check the time. For a little while, there was nothing to figure out, nothing to accomplish, and nowhere else you needed to be. You were simply there, fully experiencing the moment.

We all know what these moments feel like, yet they can become surprisingly rare in our everyday lives. We move from one responsibility to the next, tending to the people and things that matter to us, managing schedules, making decisions, and keeping up with everything life requires. Even when things are going well, we can find ourselves moving through our days with a subtle sense of disconnection. We’re participating in our lives, but not always fully experiencing them.

And sometimes, beneath all that activity, there is a quiet longing we can’t quite explain. We may have meaningful relationships, work we enjoy, and countless reasons to feel grateful, yet still sense that something deeper is calling for our attention. We might interpret that feeling as a need for change, a new direction, or something outside ourselves that will finally bring us the fulfillment we’re looking for.

But what if that longing isn’t pointing us toward something we need to find? What if it’s inviting us to reconnect with something we’ve simply forgotten?

One of the most beautiful things I’ve come to understand through my work is that our sense of connection is not dependent upon the circumstances of our lives. There is a deeper presence within us that exists before the roles we play, the responsibilities we carry, and the stories we’ve come to believe about ourselves. It is the very essence of who we are, and it remains available to us even when our attention is completely absorbed in the demands of being human.

I often speak about this as our True Self, the expression of the same magnificent Life Force that moves through all of creation. We are not separate from that intelligence, that love, or that extraordinary creative potential. We are expressions of it. And yet, as we become increasingly identified with our thoughts, emotions, and external experiences, we can lose awareness of this deeper dimension of ourselves.

This is where the journey of spiritual awakening becomes so relevant to our everyday lives. It isn’t about escaping our human experience or reaching some extraordinary state that exists beyond the life we’re living. It’s about becoming more fully present within our humanity while remembering the greater truth of who we are. It’s learning to experience love without needing everything to be perfect, to find steadiness when circumstances are uncertain, and to recognize that the connection we seek has never actually left us.

As we begin to shift our awareness and open the flow of energy within us, we create space to experience life differently. We become less consumed by the constant activity of the mind and more available to the wisdom of the heart. We can begin to notice the ways we have been holding ourselves apart from the very love, peace, and connection we long to experience. And gradually, these qualities become more than occasional feelings. They become something we can consciously embody in the way we live, love, and relate to the world around us.

There is something especially meaningful about exploring this as we approach the holiday season. This time of year brings so many opportunities for connection, generosity, reflection, and love, yet it can also be a season when we feel particularly overwhelmed or disconnected. Between the expectations, the gatherings, the memories, and the emotions that naturally arise, it’s easy to become so focused on everything happening around us that we forget to tend to what is happening within us.

But the sacredness of this season isn’t found only in the traditions we celebrate or the moments we hope to create. It lives in the presence we bring to them. When we begin to experience ourselves as connected to something greater, even the simplest moments can take on a deeper richness. A conversation becomes an opportunity to truly see another person. An ordinary act of kindness becomes an expression of love. A quiet moment becomes an opportunity to remember the Divine presence moving through us.

Perhaps this year, rather than approaching the holidays with another list of things to do, we can begin with a different intention. To be more present. To live from the heart. To recognize the sacred within the ordinary. And to remember that the love and connection we hope to experience with others begin with the relationship we cultivate with our own True Self.

We don’t have to wait for life to become less complicated to experience a deeper connection to it. The invitation is here, in the midst of the lives we’re already living.
